Extension – Same Employer
As a live-in caregiver, if you have been in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver (LCG) program for less than four years and you continue to work for the same employer, you do not need a new Labour Market Opinion (LMO) from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada when applying to extend your stay in Canada as a worker.

Apply for Work Permit

Applying To Extend Your Stay In Canada As a Live-In Caregiver

If you want to continue working for the same employer, you will need to get:
• a letter from the employer stating that you will continue to be employed on a full-time basis for an additional period of time;
• a copy of a new, or extended, signed employment contract; and
• for live-in caregivers working in the province of Quebec, a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles.
However, you will need a new LMO to apply for a work permit even if you are staying with the same employer if you have participated in the LCG program for four years.
Once you have the necessary documents, you can apply for an extension of your Work Permit through the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville, Alberta.

Holder of Expired Work Permit – Implied Status
Generally, if you want to work in Canada, you need a Work Permit.

As an exception, you can work in Canada without a work permit if you applied for a new work permit before your most recent work permit expired.

Please note that you can continue working under the conditions of the expired work permit (e.g. for the same employer), until a decision is made. This is called implied status. Once the decision is made, you will either have to leave Canada or you will be able to stay in Canada as a worker.

A foreign live-in caregiver work permit process can be quite a challenge for anyone to complete, especially for working individuals who don’t know the system and all its regulations. Dealing with different government from Revenue to Immigration and with Labour and Service Canada in between can be a frustrating long road. Just recently new regulation requiring more paperwork were introduced by the Federal Labour Ministry to the long lasting foreign workers program and more are most likely to come.

This is when you need a professional to take over the complicated task. All you have to do is pick-up the phone and call Paragon Personnel who have done it hundreds of times before and know all the in’s and out’s of the system. Just provide the information and your blessing in the form of signature  and leave the rest for the pros. We will do it all from A to Z until the work permit is issued.
