Caregivers who are required to drive their own car for the performance of their duties must ensure that their insurance is providing the necessary coverage for this purpose. This is especially critical in case they will be driving the children of their employer to school, after school activities or any other task.
Generally, the employer must pay for the additional cost to obtain this insurance coverage. Also, to remember is that the employer should pay for the mileage used in performing these duties. This is the compensation for the gas used and the maintenance of the car. In British Columbia, this amount is set at 55 cents per kilometer for the year 2018.
